Auditor demands former Pontotoc County clerk pay money back

JACKSON — Mississippi state auditor Stacey Pickering has demanded nearly $14,000 from a former Pontotoc County employee after noticing a shortage in a county account.

Pickering says the county’s former Deputy Chancery Clerk Allison Stegall owes the county $13,934.97. Pickering’s office issued a statement Tuesday claiming cash paid by taxpayers on land redemption releases was taken before it was accounted for.

Auditors discovered the shortage while conducting the annual audit in October 2013. Stegall resigned from her position as Deputy Clerk two months later.
