Atmos Energy seeking to replace aging pipelines

TUPELO — Atmos Energy has asked Mississippi regulators for approval to speed up the replacement of aging natural gas pipelines.

Atmos, based in Flowood, also asks the Mississippi Public Service Commission for a surcharge to pay for the work.

The surcharge would be — in the first year — 82 cents per month. It would be adjusted annually as additional money is spent.

In May, the PSC put the request on hold while it studied it further. The three-member commission has 120 days to finish up its review.

Atmos spokesman Robert Lesley tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal that the cost of accelerated spending on the company’s system will be somewhat offset by natural gas prices, which are projected to remain low for the next several years.
