Some still call Vicksburg Mall by its old name, Pemberton Square.
But soon after RockStep Capital of Houston bought it in October 2010 from CBL Associates Properties of Chattanooga, good things started to happen.
In the years before the new ownership, the mall built in 1985 had its share of problems, as any will. Though some more than others.
Based on articles in The Vicksburg Post, Pemberton Square – named for Confederate Gen. John C. Pemberton – might have seemed at times to be the site of the Second Battle of Vicksburg.
The low point might have been 2006.
That year, the leases of five small operators were canceled and the businesses were summarily thrown out.
Also in 2006, burglars cut a hole in the roof of two sporting goods stores and made off with items valued at $30,000.
After a nine-year absence, Goody’s returned in February 2011 four months after the new owners took over.
Belk, which, along with Dillard’s, is one of three anchors, invested $1 million or more in its store in 2013, according to mall General Manager Michael Carlisle.
Soon after its takeover, RockStep bought the old Kroger building close to the mall in Vicksburg Plaza and it is now home to T.J.Maxx, Little Caesar’s and two other shops.
After J.C.Penney went through some downsizing a couple of years ago, including closing its store in Vicksburg Mall, Hobby Lobby took that space and expanded it to 54,000 square feet, Carlisle said.
The latest improvement is the Vicksburg Mall 6, which will undergo a major renovation and upgrade, including reclining leather seats and a bar for those 21 and older.
