Minnesota bans state employees from traveling to Mississippi

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is banning state employees from nonessential travel to Mississippi, making the southern state the second Dayton has targeted in less than a week for enacting controversial laws.

Dayton sent a letter Wednesday to all state employees, directing them to stop all nonessential travel to Mississippi until the state repeals a law allowing religious groups and private businesses to deny services to gay and transgender people.

The Democratic governor says when the rights of some Americans are threatened, it is the responsibility of all Americans to oppose “discriminatory acts.”

The letter follows a similar one that Dayton sent Saturday to state employees, directing them to stop all nonessential travel to North Carolina. That state’s Republican governor has signed a law limiting bathroom options for transgender people and prohibiting communities from enacting anti-discrimination ordinances.

This follows the states which have done the same thing, including Vermont, New York and Washington as well as the city of Seattle.

About Associated Press

  1. The hits just keep coming!

  2. Hit the state in the pocketbook. Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi was awarded a $618 million dollar Navy contract while SB 1523 was processing though. The White House needs to cancel that contract immediately. Please sign and share this petition.

  3. Our Governor is actively repelling our state off the possible location lists of companies around the US/Globe. Great job keeping our unemployment rate above the national average.

  4. We will be better if we keep these people out of Mississippi. Anyone who can be non judgemental are welcome and I am sure will be treated well. I encourage them to come.
For Mississippians that hate their own state, I suggest you go to Minnesota. Everyone will be Gay (happy).

  5. It is amazing today how Americans of today can crucify citizens of another State for the laws they wanted. In today’s world, only special people have rights. Maybe special rights ?
