The city of Gulfport and Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport have been awarded almost $3.9 million in federal grants. Officials say the funds are intended for airport improvement and community development.
The Sun Herald reports the airport will receive by far the bulk of the funds — more than $3 million from the Federal Aviation Administration Improvement Program for runway improvements to maintain structural integrity, minimize debris and increase passenger safety.
Another $581,000 Community Development Block Grant will go to support community development projects near the Gulfport Job Corps Center.
The city also was awarded almost $307,000 from the HUD HOME program, which provides money to help local governments implement strategies designed to promote homeownership and increase affordable housing opportunities.
