Marine research center to break ground in Port of Gulfport

Officials say a groundbreaking ceremony will be held for a new marine research center in the Port of Gulfport.

The Sun Herald reports the ceremony for the Port of Gulfport Marine Research Center will take place Monday. The center will have several elements of the University of Southern Mississippi’s new School of Ocean Science and Technology.

USM chair and professor of marine science Monty Graham says the center will have the ability to fabricate vessel parts. It should be large enough to house oceanography equipment.

Graham says the center is expected to be finished by the end of 2017.
