Several residents of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport have recently become ill.
AFRH spokesman Christopher Kelly tells local media that since Monday evening, 47 residents have fallen ill and nine have been hospitalized. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. All ill residents were in the independent living area.
Kelly says staff at the home are trying to curb any spread of the illness by reminding residents of the importance of hand-washing and confining residents who feel unwell to their rooms.
The Mississippi State Department of Health is testing stool samples and Keesler Air Force Base is testing food samples.
The home held a meeting with residents on Wednesday to update them on the investigation.
