LORMAN — Alcorn State University has completed a $47-million bond transaction for the development of a new student housing complex. According to Alcorn officials, the project is a record-setter.

“This is the largest single housing project in the university’s history,” said president George E. Ross. “Today is a great day for the Alcorn community, and this strategic venture demonstrates our commitment to ensuring a quality living and learning environment for future generations.”

The new student housing complex will be built by the Alcorn State University Educational Building Corporation and include four housing units plus an amenities building featuring a convenience store, fitness center, computer labs and leasing offices.

The new complex, scheduled to open in the fall of 2010, will replace 1,002 beds.

“Today is a significant day in the history of Alcorn,” said Michael Russ, an attorney with Butler, Snow, O’Mara, Stevens, Cannada, PLLC. “The student housing facilities that will be built with the proceeds of this bond transaction will benefit the students of Alcorn for years to come. It has been both a joy and honor for our firm, Butler Snow, to serve as bond counsel on this transaction.”

An official groundbreaking is being planned for October.
