New technology could help job seekers
Officials with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) are hoping that new technology will help the state’s job seekers find employment a lot faster without leaving the comfort of their homes.
MDES announced the introduction of the WINGS online reporting system at a Wednesday afternoon news conference at the Jackson Workforce Investment Network (WIN) job center in conjunction with Gov. Haley Barbour proclaiming the month of October as "Let’s Get Working, Mississippi."
The new system, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, will provide more efficient and better services to those seeking employment, said MDES executive director Les Range.
"These technology upgrades are critical to ensuring MDES is able to carry out its mission of increasing employment, especially during these difficult economic times when more customers visit our service centers across the state," Range said.
Job seekers may access services at one of the state’s 53 local WIN job centers, through the MDES Call Center network, online from the resource rooms in a local WIN, from their home or one of the e-WIN access points, which are located in designated public or community facilities where MDES customers have computer access.
MDES officials said that each e-WIN Access Point provides at least one publicly accessible computer with Internet and an e-WIN "ambassador" to help newcomers navigate the WIN system.
"It’s hard to believe that earlier in this decade, many of our workforce services involved manual processes with a lot of paper shuffling," said Stan McMorris, director of customer operations for MDES. "Today, we are leveraging technology to make these services more accessible than ever before."
The new technology also allows employers to list their job openings, receive a list of qualified candidates for a particular job and post the results of their interviews online from their office.
