VICKSBURG — After sitting gutted and empty for years, an historic, pioneering department store is getting new life as a luxury corporate apartment building.

In 1909 a group of men came together and broke ground for The Valley, a six-story department store. It became the biggest department store between New Orleans and Memphis. It was also the first store in the South with an elevator and air conditioning.

Just in time for its 100-year anniversary, The Valley has just reopened as an extended stay luxury corporate apartment building.

The former department store is now 20 one- and two-bedroom apartments that come fully furnished down to the plates and utensils. Though the charm of the facility was left untouched, it offers such amenities as Wi-Fi/DSL and fitness room.
