City going tobacco-free
MERIDIAN — The Meridian City Council has passed a nonsmoking ordinance that will prohibit smoking inside virtually all buildings except private homes, according to The Associated Press. The ordinance will go into effect after 30 days.
The ordinance bars smoking inside all public buildings and in some outdoor areas.
Property owners will be able to allow smoking in private residences, private clubs, retail tobacco stores, outdoor areas of workplaces, and no more than 20 percent of hotel rooms.
Restaurants and other establishments where smoking is not allowed will have the option to allow patrons to smoke outdoors on the premises if the smoking area is at least 20 feet from doors, windows, or ventilation systems.
