State leads nation in jobless increase
Regional and state unemployment rates were generally higher in December, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Forty-three states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the-month unemployment rate increases, four states registered rate decreases and three states had no rate change.
Over the year, jobless rates increased in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
The national unemployment rate was unchanged in December at 10 percent, but was 2.6 percentage points higher than a year earlier.
From Nov. 2009 to Dec. 2009, Mississippi’s unemployment rate went from 9.8 percent to 10.6 percent, which was the largest jump in the nation. Over the year, Mississippi’s jobless rate went from 7.1 percent to 9.6 percent, the 20th-largest increase.
