All House incumbents will face challengers

ACROSS MISSISSIPPI — All four of Mississippi’s U.S. House members will have opponents on the ballot this year, but none is being challenged within his own party.

Monday evening was the deadline for candidates to file qualifying papers.

In north Mississippi’s 1st District, incumbent Travis Childers is the only Democrat running. Three Republicans, four independents, one Constitution Party candidate and one Libertarian and one Reform Party candidate also filed.

In the Delta’s 2nd District, Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson is running. Three Republicans and one Reform Party candidate also filed.

In the central 3rd District, Republican incumbent Gregg Harper is running. Three Democrats and one Reform Party candidate also got in the race.

In the southern 4th District, Democratic incumbent Gene Taylor is running, as are two Republicans, one Libertarian and one Reform Party candidate.

Party primaries are June 1 and the general election is Nov. 2.
