Georgia firm awarded largest highway in Alabama history
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A Georgia firm has been selected for the largest highway construction project in Alabama history.
Alabama Transportation director Joe McInnes says Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta submitted the low bid of $168.6 million to build the interchange connecting Corridor X with Interstate 65 at Birmingham.
A Birmingham, Ala., company, Brasfield and Gorie, submitted the second lowest bid of $171.3 million.
The transportation director expects work to begin by the end of July. The project is supposed to be completed in Oct. 2014 and will provide a quicker route from Birmingham through northern Mississippi to Memphis, Tenn. Corridor X is supposed to become Interstate 22 when all work is finished.
