NATCHEZ — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has authorized the expenditure of reinstated funds for the City of Natchez.

The city was asked to select a project(s) to utilize these reinstated funds. The funding letter specified certain deadlines that Natchez was to meet in submitting their choice of projects to MDOT.

The City of Natchez met the first deadline and has submitted the following projects:

• Liberty Road Project – This project begins at a location just past John Glenn Avenue to the St. Catherine Creek Bridge. Work will include an overlay with two-foot trench widening on both sides of the roadway, rumble strips and raised pavement markers will be installed as well as new striping. The projected cost for this project is $128,000.

• Ratcliff Place Project – This project begins at Melrose Avenue and ends at Auburn Avenue. Work will include an overlay with selected areas of milling. Curb cut ramps will be installed to meet the requirements set forth by the American Disability Act with selected sidewalks to be repaired and trees removed from sidewalk areas. New striping and raised pavement markers will be installed and certain utility adjustments will be required. The projected cost for this project is $132,200.

• Brenham Avenue Project – This project begins at St. Catherine Street and ends at Minor Street. Work will include an overlay with selected areas of milling. Curb cut ramps will be installed to meet the requirements set forth by the American Disability Act. New striping and raised pavement markers will be installed and certain utility adjustments will be required. The railroad tracks will be removed at the intersection of Aldrich Street and Brenham Avenue. The projected cost for this project is $112,452.

In addition to the projected cost of construction for the three selected projects, the projected cost for project contingencies, inspections and material testing is $55,897.

The total projected project cost is $428,550 with the amount above the 80 percent federal share of $342,840 coming from local city funds. These projects have been confirmed by the Mississippi Transportation Commission with approval given by the commission to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the City of Natchez to further spell out the requirements and deadline to bring these projects to fruition.

The projects will now be developed by the city utilizing the Local Public Agency – Project Development Manual through the Local Public Agency Division at MDOT. All contracts are required to awarded and executed no later than Dec. 31, 2011 in order to retain the federally reinstated surface transportation funds.
