Antler-less deer hunting proposal raised
JACKSON — Mississippi wildlife officials are proposing that primitive weapons, including some centerfire rifles, be legal for hunting antler-less deer from Nov. 8-19.
The Clarion-Ledger reports that the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks may consider the proposal when it meets July 22 in Jackson.
Wildlife officials are also proposing a special archery season from Nov. 20-Jan. 19 to coincide with gun seasons on deer; and a youth weekend Nov. 6-7, in addition to the youth season Nov. 8-19. Youths will be allowed to kill bucks during both periods.
The proposals came after the attorney general’s office issued an opinion that wildlife officials had no authority to allow archery equipment during gun seasons on deer under current regulations.
The same opinion said that officials could create seasons under certain situations, including helping curb growing deer populations.
