City passes budget with no tax hike, layoffs possible

WAVELAND — The Waveland City Council has approved a $6.65-million budget that won’t increase property taxes.

Mayor Tommy Longo said it may include employee layoffs, but that’s at the discretion of the department heads.

Alderman Charles Piazza voted against the budget on Wednesday.

Longo tells The Sun Herald that the council chose to cut $675,000 across the board. He said that cut will leave the city with a $900,000 cash reserve.

The budget includes a $2.3-million utility fund.

Longo said utilities will increase by $10.80 each month for residents who use all five services garbage, gas, water, sewer and sewage treatment.
