Sentencing Thursday in Howard Industries immigration raid
HATTIESBURG — Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hattiesburg for a Howard Industries executive who was charged with conspiracy following the nation’s largest workplace raid on illegal immigrants.
The Hattiesburg American reports Jose Humberto Gonzalez was the only company executive charged following the August 2008 raid on the company’s Jones County operations. The raid netted more than 600 arrests of illegal workers.
Gonzalez pleaded guilty to conspiracy in an indictment that alleged he knowingly hired illegal immigrants at Howard Industries in Laurel, where he was personnel director.
He faces up to five years in prison.
His sentencing was initially scheduled for August, but was delayed by the court.
