HATTIESBURG — It is looking less likely that Hattiesburg will make bars and nightclubs close earlier.

The City Council has been discussing whether to mandate a midnight closing time.

The city currently lets bars and clubs stay open until 2 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and midnight Sunday.

The Hattiesburg American reports that during a public hearing Dec. 14, several bar managers said a midnight closing would hurt their businesses.

City Council president Kim Bradley agreed.

The managers offered suggestions to improve safety, including eliminating all-you-can drink cover charges.

The discussion of shorter hours began after three University of Southern Mississippi football players were shot at a club Nov. 14.
