MDOT to stage demonstration of river turbines

VICKSBURG — The Mississippi Department of Transportation plans a demonstration project to light up a display at the welcome center in Vicksburg with electricity produced from underwater turbines in the Mississippi River.
Free Flow Power Corp., based in Gloucester, Mass., has 88 such energy-generating turbine projects along the river.
MDOT says an informational kiosk explaining the project and the benefits of hydrokinetic energy will also accompany the display.
Free Flow uses river currents to spin turbines. The turbines are placed or suspended in the stream below the navigation channel to avoid interference from shipping.
MDOT says it hopes the project will show that lighting transportation assets, such as bridges, from the natural flow of a river can be done locally with the use of the turbines.
