Crews to cut up and raise sunken fishing boat
GULF OF MEXICO — Salvage crews plan to cut a sunken fishing boat in half before raising it as the investigation continues into the May 18 collision that killed three crewmen.
Ben Landry, spokesman for the fishing boat Sandy Point’s owner, Omega Protein Inc., said Inland Salvage Inc. of Daphne, Ala., is handling the operation.
Sections of the vessel will be taken by barge to Gulfport, where the wreckage will be turned over to the Coast Guard, he said.
The Sandy Point was homeward bound with a load of menhaden when it collided with the 660-foot container ship Euros London near Ship Island.
A Coast Guard spokeswoman said it would be months before the results of its investigation would be released.
The Sandy Point was based at Omega Protein’s Moss Point plant, where menhaden is processed for use in items such as nutritional supplements.
Landry said the loss of the ship, one of eight that operates from Moss Point, has not affected the amount of catch brought in.
The Sandy Point eventually will be scrapped, Landry said.
The salvage operation has included removing fuel, lubricating oil and hydraulic oil, as well as decomposing fish in the vessel’s hold.
