Boyd Gaming plans major repairs at IP Casino

BILOXI — The new owner of IP Casino is preparing to spend millions on infrastructure repairs, including plans to stabilize the barge on which the casino sits.

The Sun Herald reports that Boyd Gaming Corp. on Wednesday presented those plans to the Biloxi Development Review Committee.

The casino, built in 1995, sits on nine hopper barges welded into a single, three-story structure. Engineers say lifting it above the water on steel and concrete piers will make maintenance easier and could extend the life of the barge .

Boyd, when it announced buying IP last month, has said it will invest $44 million in the property.

Officials say the work is expected to begin in October and be completed in six months. The casino will not close.
