Total assistance to flood victims tops $19M

WEST MISSISSIPPI — Federal and state assistance approved for people in 14 Mississippi counties that were declared a major disaster area by the president following the historic flooding of the Mississippi River and its tributaries has reached $19,037,109.

Here is a summary through July 13 of all state and federal assistance to individuals in counties affected by the flooding between May 3 and June 17:

• $10,549,009 in total housing and personal needs has been approved. Of that amount, $9,925,881 has been approved for housing expenses, including temporary rental assistance, home repair costs and assistance toward replacing destroyed homes.

• $623,128 has been approved as “Other Needs Assistance” to cover essential disaster-related needs such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.

• $8,488,100 in loans to homeowners, renters or business owners has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

• 3,813 applicants have registered with FEMA for some form of disaster assistance.

• 2,953 visits have been made at Disaster Recovery Centers operated jointly by FEMA and the State of Mississippi.

• 2,926 home inspections to confirm disaster damage have been completed.

Teams of state and FEMA Community Relations field specialists have distributed more than 39,149 flyers and worked in the affected counties to help identify and assist disaster survivors. In the course of explaining the recovery process, the teams have visited 9,691 residents, 2,130 businesses, 899 faith-based groups, 306 community organizations, 57 schools, 527 emergency managers, fire and law enforcement officials, 381 government officials and 129 post offices.
