Endangered species dies as zoo prepares for inspectors

JACKSON — Jackson Zoo officials must deal with the sudden death of an endangered species as they prepare for a visit by national inspectors.

Rosemary Jalink, zoo spokeswoman, says Longhorn, the zoo’s elderly female white rhinoceros, was found dead July 16.

Jalink tells The Clarion-Ledger a necropsy is being performed to determine the cause of death.

Dave Wetzel, the zoo’s deputy director, said Longhorn was 42.

Inspectors are scheduled to visit the zoo next month to assess whether it will maintain its accreditation with the American Zoological and Aquarium Association.

Last month, city officials gave $300,000 to zoo officials for repairs to restrooms and plumbing, plus the Jackson City Council approved an $800,000 loan to help the group prepare for the inspection.

   you know, its a shame it took an endangered species to die to get city officials to make the zoo safe and nice for people .. so im just guessing that when other animals at jackson zoo died noone cared correct? Or should i say it didnt move the “right people”. so now the big dogs comin to inspect now these people want to make it better. What a shame…
