Wimberly & Associates CEO makes work a game and then plays that game all day long every day

One of the great opportunities in life is to find your “sweet spot” in your work. I believe we’re all blessed with gifts and talents to be used to serve others in the marketplace. When we are passionate about what we do, the labor of work seems lighter and our daily tasks are filled with joy. It’s easy to drift through life reacting to what comes our way. Instead, we can be intentional about our journey and try to really think about what we truly enjoy doing. This is not an easy task, and it’s easy to settle for working in zones of competency, but not passion. However, as author David McCullough noted, “Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love.”
Andy Wimberly, CEO of Wimberly & Associates, has found his passion in his work, and he also helps others find theirs, too. Wimberly is a life-long Jackson resident and has been a financial planner for more than 30 years. Even though he developed a very successful financial services business, he also had a passion for people and organizations beyond their financial needs. In 1996, he began incorporating life coaching into his financial practice, and today his coaching and consulting business has outgrown his financial practice. He helps businesses and successful people, “find clarity and purpose for their business and/or life.” Wimberly shared that two of his early mentors taught him to “make work a game and then just play all day long.” When you visit with Wimberly, one the things that immediately strikes you is his passion. He truly loves what he does. In fact, he believes that “If you are not really passionate about your vocation – find something else to do!”
The other thing that you notice about Wimberly is that he is a very active listener. He asks probing and challenging questions and listens carefully to how you respond. He noted, “It is difficult for most people to ask themselves these questions and even more difficult to give themselves the answers. An independent advocate with a structured process helps solves this dilemma.” There is a lot of power in a great question. Wimberly has a real gift for asking these questions and helping you gain perspective on what you are trying to accomplish. He also acknowledges that all of business is built on a foundation of relationships and trust. Wimberly provides prospective clients a free 90-minute “focus” workshop so both parties can determine if a relationship could be established and if his process will be of help. For organizations, he utilizes a process he calls the “Big Idea” to help organizations jump start their long-term strategic plan.
Each of our lives are stories that are unfolding. We have a past, present, and potential future. Whether you’re just out of school trying to think about a career or just ending a career that you have worked in for many years, there is the potential to have your life be a powerful and meaningful story. The question is whether we passively let the story unfold or approach with purposefulness and planning. In order to do that we have to ask ourselves the hard questions. Whenever I visit with someone like Wimberly who has successfully integrated his passions with his profession I am encouraged. I know that he will continue to similarly inspire others and help companies and individuals find their true potential.
