Huntington Ingalls workers presented with new union plan

PASCAGOULA — Employees at Huntington Ingalls shipyard in Pascagoula reporting for the 6 a.m. shift last Friday were greeted by union leaders handing out flyers with details on a new three-year contract proposal.

Union leaders would not comment on the contract, saying a joint statement would be released later Friday. They did say they are recommending approval of contract which would run through March 8, 2015.

The contract would apply to all unions at the Pascagoula facility and the shipyard.

All unions will vote Dec. 1.

“Union leadership and Ingalls Shipbuilding management have worked together on developing a proposal that, if approved, would extend the current collective bargaining agreement for three years to 2015,” Ingalls spokesman Bill Glenn said in a statement released last Thursday night.

“Union leadership have agreed to recommend the proposal to their membership,” he said.

The current contract, negotiated in 2009, is due to expire next March.

According to the flyer, the proposal would give workers three wage increases — 60 cents per hour on Jan. 9, 60 cents on March 11, 2013, and 70 cents March 10, 2014.

All qualified employees will receive a payment of $1,000 in lieu of a cost of living adjustment that may be due in 2012. The bonus is subject to state and federal taxes and FICA and 401K deductions.

The proposal also includes a slight increase to employees for health care premiums.

Ingalls is the largest private employer in Mississippi.
