Officials plan to demolish abandoned homes

FULTON — Fulton officials are moving forward with plans to clean up or demolish unkempt and abandoned houses throughout the city.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal says 10 properties thought to be abandoned are being considered for demolition by the Fulton Board of Aldermen. They say the houses are dilapidated and pose health and safety concerns.

Regulations say a house can be torn down 30 days after a certified notice of condemnation has been sent to the property owner.

Certified letters were sent to the owners, but some have been returned to the city as undeliverable.

Some of the properties are in the middle of the grace period, after which, if the owners have not made contact with city hall, they will be demolished.
