Senate committee approves teacher debit card legislation

JACKSON — School teachers would get debit cards to buy classroom supplies under a money-saving measure moving forward in the state Senate.
A bill approved yesterday by the Senate Education Committee mandates that districts use debit cards for employees’ travel and classroom supply purchases. It also calls for districts to pay employees only once a month and to stop issuing paper paychecks.
A report projects the supply money changes could save more than $8 million.
A larger efficiency bill that would require school districts in each county to consolidate back-office services, a priority of Gov. Phil Bryant, may be stalling.
Bryant’s push for county-level consolidation is facing doubts. A House Education subcommittee tabled a bill yesterday, and the Senate has yet to take it up.
The bill is Senate Bill 2761.
