Delta group wants state funds for Grammy Museum

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland group raising funds for a Grammy Museum to celebrate the state’s musical heritage is seeking $6 million to support its cause.

Project manager R. Allan Hammons told a crowded room of legislators that the museum would be the first satellite of the national Grammy Museum in Los Angeles.

The Cleveland Music Foundation, a nonprofit created to raise funds for the museum, has already gotten $3.5 million from city and private funds, and hopes to raise $3.5 million to $5.5 million more from Bolivar County and others.

Hammons says the project is still in a preliminary stage and does not immediately need the $6 million requested. House Tourism Committee chairwoman Rita Martinson, a Madison Republican, says the Legislature may approve a smaller amount, with additional future funding.
