Small Delta community gets repaid for clerk’s embezzlement

ANGUILLA — State Auditor Stacey Pickering has presented the town of Anguilla with a $108,000 check to restore funds allegedly embezzled by a former clerk.
Pickering says in a news release that an investigation showed town clerk Manika Kelly allegedly embezzled funds from the town’s water and sewer accounts from October 2006 to November 2011.
Kelly was town clerk from July 2001 to Feb. 7, 2012, when she was fired.
She was indicted on Aug. 20, and her case is set for trial in May in Sharkey County.
If convicted, Kelly faces up to 10 years in prison.
