Abortion clinic fighting closure; urging patients to help

JACKSON— Mississippi’s only abortion clinic can’t meet the mandates of a 2012 state law, and the governor wants to shut it down. But the Jackson Women’s Health Organization is not quietly retreating.

The law requires that the clinic’s doctors have local hospital admitting privileges. They can be hard to obtain, and some hospitals won’t give them to the doctors because they travel from out of state.

The clinic is asking a federal judge to overturn the law, though a trial could be months away. The judge temporarily blocked the state from punishing the clinic.

Clinic employees urge patients to call elected officials and complain about laws that limit access to abortion.

Protesters come from as far as Colorado and Nevada, and volunteers pray outside the bright pink clinic several times a week.
