Supervisors give themselves 15 percent pay raise

LIBERTY — Amite County supervisors have voted themselves a 15 percent pay raise.

The Enterprise-Journal reports the action came this past week.

Supervisors say it the first one for the board in nearly a decade and is allowed by state law.

The board voted unanimously for their increases, which come to $5,700 for each of the five supervisors. Their annual salaries will go from $34,700 to $40,400.

Their salary is based on the county’s total assessed value, which 2011 figures showed was $131.2 million, including oil and gas production.

Officials say it is the first raise for supervisors since October 2004.

Under state law, the salaries can be increased only after the board passes a resolution stating the amount of the increase and spread it on its minutes.
