Schools settle lawsuit with city over tax collections

JACKSON — Jackson Public Schools and the city of Jackson have settled a lawsuit over the school system’s tax collections

The Clarion-Ledger reports an agreement was finalized last week that will max out the district’s operational millage while protecting taxpayers from future hikes.

The deal brings to an end a budgeting squabble between the two sides that dates back as far as 2009 and culminated in a standoff over the school’s 2013 millage.

The settlement sidesteps the entire dispute, voluntarily dismissing the lawsuit in exchange for a deal setting the district’s operational millage at 65.91 mills moving forward — an increase of 3.33 mills over fiscal 2013.
