One drops out of Hub City mayoral race; throws support to Ware

HATTIESBURG — One of five candidates is withdrawing from the Sept. 24 special election for Hattiesburg mayor.

Nathan Jordan says today that he’s no longer interesting in running, and he’s now supporting another independent candidate, Dave Ware.

WDAM-TV reports Jordan’s name was left off some ballots in the June 4 regular election for mayor.

Democratic incumbent Johnny DuPree narrowly defeated Ware in June, but Ware contested the results, saying there were irregularities with some ballots and the way some votes were counted.

A judge last week ordered a new election, and Gov. Phil Bryant on Tuesday set the Sept. 24 date. Bryant said all candidates who ran in June will be on the ballot again, unless any withdraws.

The June ballot also had independents Shawn O’Hara and Clyde Stewart.
