Hosemann presents largest-ever Tidelands check

MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST — Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has presented coastal officials a check for more than $9.7 million for tidelands-related projects along the Gulf Coast.

Hosemann said the amount — $9,755,926.46 — is the largest tidelands amount ever returned to the Gulf Coast to date.

Mississippians own the public trust tidelands, the land covered by water at high tide. Rent is collected from tidelands leaseholders, including casinos. The money is supposed to go toward “conservation, reclamation, preservation, acquisition, education” and better access to the water.

Jamie Miller, executive director of the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, says the fund provides essential funding to the agency for program management. Miller says it also allows the state to reinvest in the community.
