Ex-attorney gets jail time for stealing from Veterans Affairs

gavel_rgbPEARL — A former Mississippi attorney has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for the theft of funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Federal prosecutors say in a news release that 45-year-old Jason Zebert of Pearl was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge Carlton W. Reeves Jr. In addition to prison time, Reeves ordered Zebert to serve three years of supervised release and repay $198,669 to the government.

Prosecutors say Zebert worked as an attorney and fiduciary representing veterans. He pleaded guilty to stealing funds from the Department of Veterans Affairs, which had been entrusted to him for spending solely on behalf of the veterans he represented.
