Stupid comments from Mississippi politicians

By the Mississippi Business Journal
Mississippi’s legislators just aren’t afraid to blast their cowardice to the world.
The MBJ’s most recent favorite examples:

  • The Clarion-Ledger‘s Jan. 21 story “Open meetings bill passes Senate floor” highlights a new law (SB 2289) that would put teeth in the state’s Open Meeting Act. Elected officials who violate the act would have to personally pay a $1,000 fine — instead of being able to pass it off on taxpayers like they do now.

Sen. Billy Hudson, R-Hattiesburg, a former Forrest County supervisor told the Clarion-Ledger:

“This bill would make it almost impossible for local government to conduct business without the fear of facing a fine.”

Yes, Mr. Hudson, that is the point. Thanks for making it.

But he kept going:

“These guys can’t afford a fine of $1,000,” Hudson added.

Again, the point.

Did he misunderstand the question?

  • In the story “Bizz killerSen. Dean Kirby, R-Pearl, who chairs the Finance Committee, told reporter MBJ Clay Chandler that a bill that would raise Mississippi’s alcohol content from 5% to 8% had zero chance of making it out of his committee.

His reasoning?

“I really don’t want to put my committee members in an uncomfortable position in an election year,” Kirby said.

Does he know he should be embarrassed to admit that?

This beer bill would enable job creation in Mississippi and increasing state revenues – in a horrible recession, no less. But he believes dealing with it would be politically uncomfortable.

His constituency should be outraged and offended.

Elected public officials have epidemic amnesia these days. They so often forget their job description: Take the heat.

enabled this. And the indies and disaffected Democrats who switched to vote for Republicans, because change was happening fast enough or whatever, have enabled the party that gave us 8 years of dismal job growth. I’ll never understand the logic behind voting these guys back in power.
