Toyota adding 125 jobs at Huntsville, Ala., engine plant

Toyota plans to expand its Huntsville, Ala., engine production facility by investing an additional $80 million and adding at least 125 new jobs, the company announced Friday.

The expansion will bring total investment at Toyota’s Alabama plant to more than $700 million and the total number of jobs to more than 1,150.

By spring of 2014, the new assembly line will add an additional 216,000 to annual V-6 engine capacity, increasing total engine production at the Huntsville plant to more than 700,000 annually.

Toyota has been manufacturing the engines at the Huntsville plant for nearly a decade.

The Japanese automaker began operations in November at a new $800 million plant in Union County’s Blue Springs outside of Tupelo that assembles the Corolla. The plant has the annual capacity to produce 150,000 vehicles and expects to eventually employ nearly 2,000 people.

The Mississippi facility marked the opening of Toyota’s 14th North American plant.
