Cal-Maine Foods buys Pilgrim’s Pride

Cal-Maine Foods, the largest poultry egg producer and distributor in the United States, has announced the acquisition of Pilgrim’s Pride.

The Jackson-based company (NASDAQ: CALM) said in a release earlier today that the deal includes two production complexes with capacity for approximately 1.4 million laying hens and adjacent land located near Pittsburg, Texas.

The transaction is expected to be closed next month.

According to their website, Colorado-based Pilgrim’s Pride is the second-largest chicken producer in the world, with operations in the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico. They reported more than $1.9 billion in net sales in their first quarter FY12.

Cal-Maine’s closing price on the NASDAQ today was $36.34, down 0.98%.

    I’m pretty sure they only aquired the egg operations aspect…not the whole company. May want to re-word your title and opening paragraph.
