Last year, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said it was adding more addresses to the intenet domain list of 21 suffixes. That brought a surge of applications, including suffixes such as dot-NFL and dot-Apple.
But The Weather Channel wants to use the dot-weather domain exclusively, and applied to ICANN for its use.
“The application was a part of a widely publicized open process,” TWC’s David Blumenthal said in a statement. “The Weather Channel was the only entity that chose to apply for dot-weather.”
But others are challenging The Weather Channel’s move, saying the name should be generic. And there is much at stake over the outcome since weather information is one of the most-sought items on the internet.
