Square Books named #1 best bookstore in America

April 2, 2013

Publisher’s Weekly has named Square Books in Oxford, the number-one bookstore in the country.

In a release on their website, the publishing magazine says its giving its twentieth Bookstore of Year Award to Square Books and owners Richard and Lisa Howorth.

In addition to being a readers paradise for more than thirty years, the downtown Oxford shop is home to the popular MPB radio show “Thacker Mountain Radio” and the annual Oxford Conference on the Book.

Later this month it will hold its second annual Camp Square Books for adults.

“I love the place,” author and Square Books regular John Grisham is quoted as saying. “When you walk in the front door you can smell books. Time stops, and you want to browse and read and gossip and drink coffee upstairs on the balcony for the rest of the day. If you want a book, it’s somewhere in the store.
If you want to know something about a book or an author, Richard or one of his staff will have the answers. If you want to meet authors, they’ll stop by soon enough.”
