Upside of miserable weather: Over-supply of meat could lower price of grilling

Maybe – just maybe – Mississippians who love to grill out will reap an unexpected benefit from the recent cold, rainy weather – lower prices on steaks and other delectables for the grill.

Outdoor grilling has been a pursuit delayed for some time now by constant rain that recently was joined by chilly temperatures. The likely result is a super market over-supply of steaks, ground beef, center cuts and Boston butts, says John Michael Riley, an agriculture economist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service. “So now they have got a lot of inventory,” he said..

Food retailers order their meats based on historical use. This time of year is supposed to be the kick off of grilling season. “So now they have got a lot of inventory,” he said.

The problem, Riley said, is that “no one wants to be grilling in the cold standing over a nice rib eye,” especially if rain accompanies the cold.

“Normally, we have had the grills cranked up for a number of weeks,” he added.

Mississippi cattlemen and other livestock producers are taking a price hit as orders fall off with store inventories still high, according to Riley.

Some warm weather and sunshine will help bring the balance back, he noted.
