VICKSBURG, Mississippi – Mississippi native and Iraq war veteran Col. John W. Cross took command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District in a ceremony Friday morning officiated by Maj. Gen. John W. Peabody, commander of the Corps’ Mississippi Valley Division,

Col. Cross assumed command of the 68,000-square-mile District from Col. Jeffrey R. Eckstein.

Cross is a native of Laurel and a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Central Texas and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the Army War College.

Cross previously served as the XVIII Airborne Corps Engineer and deployed with the Corps to Iraq. In Iraq, he served as the deputy engineer to U.S. Forces Iraq and was responsible for the final disposition of more than 80 bases and housing for over 50,000 soldiers as well as the construction of facilities for the Department of State.
