The 1,277 volunteers who had a part in the recent Coastal Cleanup Day picked up 956 bags of trash from Mississippi’s coastal beaches and waterways. That amounts to 15,465 pounds of marine trash.
The cleanup is organized annually by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and Mississippi Marine Debris Task Force. This year was the 25th annual cleanup.
Earlier, volunteers with Mississippi Power’s Renew Our Rivers program pitched in to clean three coastal sites. They removed 8.7 tons of that was too large to bag.
