(UPDATE) Mother, son found shot to death in Oxford

crimeOXFORD, Mississippi — A north Mississippi elementary school principal and her 12-year-old son were found shot to death early Friday in a home in south Oxford, police said.

The bodies of Carol Lavett Gary, 43, and Patrick Earl Gary Jr. were found at a home near South Oaks subdivision on County Road 301. The home is near Mississippi Highway 7, about 3 ½ miles south of the town square.

Police said Gary was principal at Davidson Elementary School in Water Valley and her son was a seventh grader at Oxford Middle School.

Authorities said they received a call about the shootings about 6 a.m. Friday.

No arrest was immediately reported, and an investigation by state and local law enforcement officers continued. Yellow police tape surrounded the one-story brick home.

Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy said autopsies will be done at the state Crime Lab in Jackson.

Lisa Wolfe, a fellow educator, told The Oxford Eagle (http://bit.ly/rekix0) that Gary was a “true friend.”

“She was very involved in her church and had so many ideas to implement in the schools,” Wolfe said. “This is a huge loss to Water Valley and the educational community. She will be greatly missed.”

Gary graduated from Coffeeville High School in 1987 and earned degrees in education from the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.
