While the historic Biloxi Lighthouse is an icon of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, there is another lighthouse nearby and it is getting a new paint job. Now, officials will turn to renovating the structure’s interior.
Workers are whitewashing the Round Island Lighthouse, rebuilt at the foot of the U.S. 90 high-rise bridge in Pascagoula.
City officials said in July the idea behind the paint job is to return it to the way it looked in the 1960s and 1970s on Round Island. The lighthouse was moved to shore after numerous efforts to rebuild it on Round Island failed. Its interior still needs to be completed.
According to the Sun Herald, Jen Dearman, the city’s community and economic development director, has called the paint job a “light whitewashing,” which means the brick work is supposed to show through.
Then the fundraising will begin in earnest to raise $200,000 for the interior — stairs and lighting.
