WASHINGTON – Mississippi is one of 16 states to set a record for exports in 2013, according to a release today by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker.

Last year was the fourth consecutive year Mississippi has set an export record. Exports last year were $12.4 billion, compared to $11.8 billion in 2012. The export levels have risen steadily since 2005 when exports were at $4 billion.

Nationally, total merchandise exports from the 50 U.S. states helped contribute to the record-setting value of goods and services exports, which reached $2.3 trillion in 2013. Ten more states experienced merchandise export growth.

“These export numbers show that for more and more American companies, selling internationally is critical to growing their businesses and strengthening our economy,” said Pritzker. “We know for a fact, that for every $1 billion in exports nearly 5,000 jobs are supported across our nation, and with more than 95 percent of the world’s potential consumers residing outside our borders, exports will continue to be an important driver of the local and national economy.”

Mississippi’s largest market was Panama, which received $2.2 billion in exports, representing 17.5 percent of the state’s total merchandise exports. Panama was followed by Canada ($2 billion), Mexico ($1.3 billion), China ($671 million), and the Netherlands ($483 million).

Mississippi’s largest merchandise export category is petroleum and coal products, which accounted for $4.3 billion. Other top merchandise exports are chemicals ($1.6 billion), transportation equipment ($1.1 billion), computer and electronic products ($981 million) and paper ($801 million).

The other 15 states that set records for exports in 2013 were Texas ($279.7 billion), California ($168.1 billion), Washington ($81.9 billion), Louisiana ($63.1 billion), Michigan ($58.5 billion), Ohio ($50.5 billion), Georgia ($37.6 billion), Tennessee ($32.4 billion), North Carolina ($29.3 billion), South Carolina ($26.1 billion), Kentucky ($25.3 billion), Connecticut ($16.5 billion), Maryland ($11.8 billion), Colorado ($8.7 billion) and Oklahoma ($6.9 billion).
