Remington locked & loaded for announcement of Huntsville, Ala., factory

Gunmaker Remington Outdoor Co. will soon announce plans to open a major manufacturing operation in Huntsville, according to multiple reports.

The Remington plant planned for Huntsville, Ala., would be second to only the company's New York plant in size.

Ty West, managing editor of the Birmingham Business Journal, reported Saturday on a story in Military Times that said Remington executives are expected to sign a deal on Monday to purchase a 500,000-square-foot facility in Huntsville. The report said Alabama’s reputation as a strong supporter of Second Amendment rights was a factor in the decision.

West reported the project will create more than 2,000 jobs in the state, according to Yellowhammer Politics.

The Huntsville plant would be one of the largest of Remington’s plants, second only to its New York plant.

Several other states were courting Remington, which needed to boost its manufacturing capabilities due to high demand for guns in recent years – a trend not gone unnoticed in Mississippi, where state House Speaker Phillip Gunn has made personal contact with firearms and ammunition manufacturers to persuade them to come to Mississippi.

The Remington project would mark a huge victory for Huntsville, which was also recently trying to secure a manufacturing facility for Boeing’s new 777X – but that work ultimately stayed in Washington state.
