The story so far this winter in South Mississippi has been ice and snow, but residents now face a new threat — flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for areas along both the Chickasawhay and Pearl rivers.
The Chickasawhay warning affects the counties of George, Greene and Wayne and extends into tonight. At 6 p.m. yesterday, the Chickasawhay was at 21.6 feet. Flood stage is 20.0 feet. Minor flooding is occurring and is expected to continue until tomorrow evening.
The Pearl River warning is for the counties of Hancock and Pearl River. The warning will continue until further notice as more rain could change the forecast.
At 6 p.m. yesterday, the Pearl River was at 15.5 feet. The flood stage is 14.0 feet, and minor flooding is occurring.
Forecasters are expecting the river to continue to rise through tomorrow morning, reaching 16.5 feet. They expect a slow fall to begin Wednesday afternoon.
