In the wake of the devastating tornado that caused widespread damage in the city of Tupelo Monday, a new website is aiming to help in the recovery efforts while at the same time illustrating the strength of community.
Spearheaded by the Tupelo-based advertising firm Mabus Agency and sponsored by Renasant Bank, www.tupelostrong.com was launched Tuesday afternoon. The grass-roots mission is to match available assets with storm victims’ needs, serving as a bridge between donors and donees. With the theme “Share Resources. Help Others,” the site gives a link to the Create Foundation of Tupelo for those wanting to make a cash donation as well as information on available goods and services.
Josh Mabus, owner of Mabus Agency, admitted that when he struck on the idea for the website, he was worried that victims who had lost everything might be ill-served by an Internet-based help site.
“I wondered if the victims of the storms would even have access to a computer,” he said.
Fortunately, he has been pleasantly surprised. As of this morning, www.tupelostrong.com had already recorded roughly 76,000 views and some 17,000 visitors. Mabus said those visits have come from as far away as Texas.
“It’s fulfilling to know that people all over the country” are watching and care about the plight of Tupelo, he added.
